Recycle Mobile Phones
It is extremely important that old mobile phones that cannot be reused should be sent to a recycling center in order to keep the dangerous and toxic materials like mercury, arsenic and lead from endangering the environment. It is obvious that you can make a difference in the present situation being faced in the UK. Millions of cell phone users daily replace their phones for new ones, discarding millions of “old” phones that either lie unused in their homes or in landfills.
Recycling of these unused phones will help to keep toxic waste out of landfills and stop the hazardous wastes from leaching into the groundwater and soil. Companies have introduced a great number of environmental schemes in order to encourage people to participate in mobile phone recycling programs and campaigns.
It is fairly easy to recycle your old phone. Don’t hang on to it – say goodbye and be happy in knowing that it is better off recycled as almost all of its materials are recovered and used to make brand new products. Before you turn in your phone at the recycling centre make sure that all data is removed from your phone. Photos, texts, and videos should be downloaded to your desk top PC or laptop so that you don’t lose any precious memory and then remove the SIM. The next step would be to hand over the phone, accessories, batteries and charger to the nearest recycling centre.
Since it takes thousands of years for a mobile phone and battery to break down fully, it is most likely to pollute the environment. New laws in the UK state that the throwing of old electronic devices or gadgets (including mobile phones) in a bin is an offence and instead they should be sent to a recycling centre, reused or even donated to organisations where they are given to people who cannot afford to buy a phone.
